                                                           Septic Dye Testing

  • Buyers  purchasing a home with a septic system are usually required to have a septic dye test performed. The big misconception is that most people assume if a septic system passes a dye test that the  system is functioning properly.  In some cases this may not be true.

  • Mulvehill Home Inspections believes in making sure our clients are fully informed of whatever services we provide.
  • A septic system dye test is only intended to assess the viability and function of the leach field.  It is not designed to be a thorough  inspection of the septic system.
  • A septic dye test  does not include covered,  buried or inaccessible components of the system.

                                                  A Septic Dye Test:

  •  Is designed to determine if the system is discharging untreated or partially treated effluent (sewage) to the surface on the day of the inspection only.

  • A non-toxic colorant is introduced to the system. Then the inspector walks the property looking for evidence that the dye has leaked to the soil surface.

  •  No dye observed does not grant future assurances of the overall proper function of the septic system. Weather conditions, foliage, leaves, and/or tall grass may affect test results.

  • The inspection and report are valid only for the time and date the inspection is performed.

                                   Additional Information:

  • Maintenance is required for any septic system regardless of the design or installation.

  • To receive a complete understanding of the septic system, it is recommended a qualified professional septic system company be consulted to evaluate the overall condition of the septic system, prior to closing.

  • Additional information is available from this inspection company upon request or from your local Penn State Extension office or PA DEP.
